Piano Concerto for Huw Watkins

What's the Project?

As a proficient pianist having won multiple awards for his playing as an undergraduate, Cameron has long wanted to write a concerto for his own instrument. This project looks to collaborate with composer-pianist, Huw Watkins to create a new concerto for piano and large ensemble (13-part to full orchestra).

The concerto will focus on Cameron's dance-like quality found in his orchestral works like Yr Afon Yn Yr Awyr and explore mechanistic repeating patterns and rich melodic lines.

Who is Huw Watkins?

Huw Watkins was born in Wales in 1976 and studied piano with Peter Lawson at Chetham’s School of Music and composition with Robin Holloway, Alexander Goehr and Julian Anderson at Cambridge and the Royal College of Music. In 2001 he was awarded the Constant and Kit Lambert Junior Fellowship at the Royal College of Music, where he later taught composition. He currently teaches composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

Where are you at with the Project?

Huw Watkins has confirmed his availability for the project and have north Wales-based orchestra NEW Sinfonia on board for the Welsh premiere in 2027-2028 season.

If you are commissioner, promoter, conductor or director and interested in programming this work, do get in touch with Cameron to discuss the possibility of an English Premiere.
